Gregory Johnson, PhD
Gregory Johnson, PhD, CEO has worked in the behavioral health field for over 25 years. He has held many positions during his career. Per Dr. Johnson, “two positions that has helped me as a professional – is a person working as a mental health technician and a therapist.” He believes these two departments are key components in building a fundamentally sound treatment facility! He also believes a multi-disciplinary approach is vital to resident care and system building. Dr. Johnson also stated, “Staff development programs are essential in filling the gaps of the never ending shortages in the health care arena. We accomplish these through training, maintaining, and recruiting top staff in every department. Dr. Johnson received his PhD in Psychology from Cappella University. His favorite books are The Speed of Trust and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Steven Lopez MD,
Steven Lopez MD, Psychiatrist, has been the Medical Director at Palmetto Summerville for about 15 years. He believes in the multi-disciplinary approach with our clients. This approach requires nurses, Mental Health Technicians, teachers, family, activity therapists, social work therapists, and Psychiatrists putting their heads together to get a clear picture of each child.
Dr. Lopez went to ETSU College of Medicine. He moved to Charleston to attend MUSC residency and fellowship. He hopes to never leave this great city!
Ajay Sood, MD, Psychiatrist
Ajay Sood, MD, Psychiatrist, treats children and adolescents at Palmetto Summerville Behavioral Health with mental health concerns. With his hometown in Charleston, SC; Dr. Sood has 14 years’ experience treating all mental health conditions – including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Having graduated from Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine, Dr. Sood specializes in Psychiatric care for children and teens.
Angela Tobeck, Director – Risk Management
For the last 13 years, Angela Tobeck has been committed to providing leading, evidence-based rehabilitation programs to individuals while in-custody and post-release in the community; including providing leadership and direction for the daily issues of residential programs; day reporting centers and contract compliance for non-residential facilities. These facilities include Day Reporting Centers, In-Prison programs, and Intensive Supervision Appearance Programs. Known for the ability to manage compliance and risk to all corporate and divisional policies, practices, and initiatives for state and government contracts. Ms. Tobeck also has 10+ years’ experience in the mental health field; working in case management, psychiatric hospital discharge planning, and special programming. Currently a Licensed Practical Nurse with a Master’s degree in Management and Organizational Behavior from Benedictine University Illinois.
Amy Ashland, LCPC, Director of Clinical Services
Amy Ashland, LCPC, Director of Clinical Services, has accumulated 30+ years of child, adolescent, and family experiences in the field of therapy. She has worked in a variety of mental health settings both as a Therapist and Supervisor – including inpatient, outpatient, and in private placement day schools. Amy has also worked in staff and community development, which included giving presentations on current mental health topics such as depression/suicide prevention, working with self-harming populations and self-care. She holds an M.S. in the field of Human Resources: Counseling from the National Louis University.
An early aspiring influencer on Amy’s career was her first Supervising RN, Maggie Hahn. To quote Maggie: “You Can’t take a client to where you’ve never been.” This wisdom has shaped Amy’s pursuit of delivering clinical excellence by consistently becoming both personally and professionally challenged and enriched through multiple avenues.
JaNequa Maxey, Director of Admissions
JaNequa Maxey, MSW, received her Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Clemson University. Shortly after graduation she began working with a state agency to expose local families to resources and provide case management services. After obtaining her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of South Carolina, JaNequa continued her career at Palmetto Summerville as a Clinical Therapist and later joined the admissions team where she currently serves as the Director of Admissions. The most rewarding part of her work is knowing that she is able to play a vital role in equipping our youth here at Palmetto with the tools necessary to persevere through life’s challenges. JaNequa is a native of Charleston, SC. She enjoys traveling, enriching the lives of others, and spending time with her family and friends.
