In addition to treating adolescent boys and girls with mental and behavioral health issues, it is our goal to ensure that education remains a priority and that residents leave Palmetto Summerville with an enhanced set of academic skills. Our campus features general education and special education classrooms, a computer lab, and a resource room. Special programs offered include: GED track, online high school credit recovery, online courses allowing high school credit, iPads in each classroom, school library, and access to the county library’s bookmobile.

While receiving treatment at Palmetto Summerville Behavioral Health, residents will attend a three-hour school day in a single-gender environment. Each resident will be assessed upon admission including but not limited to:

  • School interest inventory
  • Present academic levels of performance
  • South Carolina Career Interest Inventory (SCCIS)
  • Casey Life Skills Assessment

Upon reviewing assessment results and after receiving official school records, an individualized learning program will be created for each resident by a multi-disciplinary team of staff which includes South Carolina highly qualified teachers and a certified guidance counselor from our partner school in the local school district. Students have the option to proceed on to one of the following academic tracks:

  • High School Diploma
  • GED/Career Vocational
  • Special Education

Each resident will then be immersed in the school setting where all of the following are provided:

  • six classrooms including two general education classrooms, a self-contained classroom, and a resource room, a computer lab, and a study hall/library.
  • Classroom size never exceeds 12 students but averages about seven students.
  • Special technological programs offered:, TenMarks, APEX, Pathblazer–Compass Learning, and more!
  • Length of School Day: three hours + tutoring after school hours as needed
  • Curriculum-based assessments are given to special education students as required by their IEPs.
  • IEPs are managed and updated to meet the needs of residents so their needs continue to be met while they are in our facility.
  • Occupational therapist, speech therapist, and ESOL come in weekly to meet the needs of all students.
